Facilities and systems for the marine transport of passengers are an ongoing element of Sandwell's marine activity. We have supplied terminal and ferry designs, terminal upgrades, strategic and development planning, and design and construction services.

Pier redevelopment
The rehabilitation of the 70-year-old Ballantyne Pier as a combined forest products and cruise ship terminal required the seismic upgrading of a grid of 2.1 m diameter concrete caissons supporting the deck, as well as repair and strengthening of the deck itself. The new Sandwell-designed warehouse on the pier is an open-sided steel structure with wide column spacings and cruise passenger walkways incorporated in the roof structure.

Cruise ship terminal
An integral part of the new cruise ship terminal at Ballantyne Pier is a portion of one of the original transit sheds, built in the early 1920s. Classed as a heritage structure, it was restored to its original appearance and strengthened by the addition of shear walls. The new terminal includes all passenger and customs facilities.

Ferry terminal simulation
In order to preview the impact of three high-speed vehicle ferries in the congested Horseshoe Bay terminal, Sandwell developed a simulation model for assessing the capacity of the existing terminal and queuing areas. The animated model displays the operation at several levels, from the entire terminal down to individual vehicles.
