Coal Mining

When the global economy is on the upturn, energy consumption increases worldwide, placing a premium on energy supplies: oil, hydroelectric, nuclear--and coal. In fact, more than 40 percent of the world’s electrical power generation is fueled by coal--in the United States, more than 60 percent. And all that coal has to be moved: out of the ground, onto rail cars, into ships.

Sandwell has been involved for years in the movement of coal around the globe: in South Africa, Canada and Australia and, during the past year, in Indonesia, Venezuela and the United States. The U.S. moves nearly a billion tons of coal per year, almost 30 percent of it mined in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin. There, we assisted Kennecott Energy’s major expansion of the Antelope Coal Mine, from the initial planning through detailed design and construction management of the mine expansion.
