Industrial Power and Cogeneration

Long before the promulgation of PURPA in 1978 in the U.S., pulp and paper producers applied cogeneration principles in their steam and power generation plants. Since 1978, with the explosion of cogeneration projects fostered by independent power producers, technologies and practices have developed further to improve overall plant thermal efficiency and reduce capital costs for process industries of all kinds.

As a leading provider of engineering services to the pulp and paper industry, Sandwell has always been at the forefront of cogeneration and industrial power projects. We provide feasibility studies, preliminary engineering and capital cost estimates, detail designs, checkout and startup assistance, and total EPC services to owners, general contractors, and major equipment manufacturers for cogeneration and industrial power projects.

Example Projects:

  • Power plant expansion feasibility study to develop models of current operation and multiple future operating scenarios.

  • Ongoing energy services for an IPP's 225MW coal-fired circulating fluidized bed boiler cogeneration plant.

  • Detail design for the installation of a 10MW back-pressure turbine in an existing paper mill.

  • Bank’s engineer for a 200MW two-on-one combined cycle plant supporting an oil refinery.

  • Detail design for design/construct to provide a 35MW plant with multi-fuel boiler and extracting/back-pressure turbine generator.

  • Detail design for the installation of a 21MW steam turbine for a wood-fired plant supporting a paper mill.

Spring Grove, Pennsylvania Pulp mill cogeneration installation

The 400,000 pph fluidized bed boiler was the first to be installed in an integrated U.S. pulp and paper mill, and one of the largest. Sandwell supplied detailed design for the project, which provided a 45 MW plant with a circulating fluidized bed boiler and extracting/condensing turbine-generator.
