Sandwell stresses staying current on all aspects of pulping technology, from process and equipment design to installation and operation. We offer practical experience in the design of kraft fiberlines for production of any grade of pulp, ranging from high yield linerboard stock to bleached pulp. We have worked with clients on design of complete fiberlines as well as on the various component operations, including:

  • chip screening and handling
  • digester systems (continuous and batch)
  • knotters, screens, cleaners
  • refiners
  • pulp washing systems (vacuum and pressure drum types, presses, atmospheric and pressure diffusers, as well as table types)
  • oxygen delignification systems
  • bleach plants (including the use of chlorine dioxide, oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, ozone and other bleaching agents)
  • auxiliary supporting systems, such as digester heat recovery systems, chlorine dioxide generating plants and chemical preparation facilities.

Eurocan Pulp & Paper Co., Kitimat, British Columbia

Washing line installation

Adding a third washing line at the kraft mill enabled Eurocan to reconfigure its production of unbleached linerboard to achieve higher quality in both base stock and top stock processing. The 600 t/d base stock line features three Sunds hot stock refiners, three Beloit hot stock screens configured in two stages, and a seven-stage 8 m x 20 m Chemi-Washer, the largest in Canada. The installation was designed using 3D Autocad, and came in on schedule and under budget despite the winter conditions at this northern site.

No. 5 and No. 4 fiberlines

Installation of two fiberlines

A 1,000 t/d hardwood pulp line installation was followed a year later by a 1,200 t/d line for softwood pulp. The two lines replaced all previous pulping and bleaching facilities at the mill, and provide fiber for the mill's paper machines, including a new 600 t/d coated bleached paperboard machine. Sandwell provided engineering services for the two fiberlines and the new paper machine as well as for a new 400 t/d lime kiln and causticizing system.

Oxygen delignification system

Oxygen delignification system

This vendor-led turnkey 1,800 TPD two-stage oxygen delignification system and two-stage atmospheric diffuser washer enables the mill to make process changes that will reduce chemical costs and improve effluent control. Our involvement stemmed from previous work with both the vendor (Ahlstrom Machinery/Kamtech) and the mill owner, including scoping and capital cost estimates for Georgia-Pacific at the project's inception.
