Greenfield Mills

Meeting environmental standards and objectives can generate an array of benefits: cleaner air or water, improved effluent control, and reduced chemical, energy or other operating costs.

Working with a variety of fiber sources and pulping processes, we have assisted clients around the world in all aspects of project development:

  • prefeasibility and feasibility studies to define the economics and technical features of the proposed mill
  • capital cost estimates
  • supporting financing and permitting activities
  • project execution: detailed design, construction, training and start-up
  • commercial operation.

greenfield kraft pulp mill

Bleached kraft pulp mill

The scope of this US$1.2 billion development in southern Indonesia drew on Sandwell's expertise in forestry, road and railroad transport, deep water port facilities, and town site development, as well as civil, structural, pulp process, environmental, power plant, chemical plant and water treatment engineering. The 450,000 t/a bleached kraft pulp mill is now in the startup phase and is producing a premium new market hardwood fiber from nearby plantations of Acacia mangium (a fast growing indigenous hardwood). As owner's engineer, Sandwell provided all the technical support in making this the first pulp and paper project in Indonesia to be financed entirely with foreign sources on a limited recourse basis.

Recycle paper mill

This greenfield recycle paper mill is based on the specialty "mini-mill" concept. One of the first in North America to be owned and operated by a major integrated pulp and paper company, the mill produces 400 TPD of high-quality linerboard from OCC furnish.

Plantation development studies

Several land owners have established forest plantations in Uruguay, encouraged by local government programs to develop forestry opportunities. Sandwell carried out a preliminary development study to define how this wood could best be commercially utilized. We assessed the local plantations, mainly Eucalyptus (globulus and grandis) with some pine, surveyed both local and European wood users to define potential markets, and prepared pre-feasibility studies for several development options, including a variety of solid wood products, chip and log exports, and a large pulp mill project.

China

Forest management and greenfield studies

Sandwell has been active in China's forest products sector for more than ten years, providing forest management and forest industry assistance in northern China; conceptual planning for a new integrated pulp and paper mill in Heilongjiang; and several studies evaluating joint venture proposals between western companies and Chinese pulp and paper companies. Our work has covered small mills based on non-wood fiber, as well as large wood-based mills.
