Sandwell's steam and power group is conversant with all aspects of boiler technology for both power and recovery boilers. We have participated in boiler, turbine, turbine generator and cogeneration projects throughout North America and internationally, providing fuel sourcing and supply studies, equipment selection services, and all engineering from design through installation and start-up.
Cogeneration installations have ranged from 5 MW to 60 MW. Recent recovery boiler assignments include:
- acting as owner's engineer for the replacement of the bottom portion of a recovery boiler;
- computational fluid dynamic modeling of a kraft recovery boiler furnace to determine optimum modifications to a tertiary air system;
- detailed engineering for a new electrostatic precipitator for an existing recovery boiler.

Turnkey cogeneration plant
This 14 MW plant includes a 950 psi bubbling fluidized bed boiler and an 8,000 ft3/hr wood residue fuel supply system featuring a horizontal rotary screw reclaimer dedicated to wood waste and a second reclaimer used to introduce biomass into the fuel stream. Sandwell's responsibilities included consortium and project management, integration of the ABB power train and, in joint venture with JV Driver Construction, construction of infrastructure and balance of plant.

Turbine generator installation
Following our earlier work on the installation of the mill's power plant, we engineered and managed the installation of a 3.3 MW bottoming steam turbine generator to increase the power generating capacity of the mill to 27.3 MW. The additional power eliminates the mill's dependence on outside sources, making it self-sufficient year round and a net exporter of power to the local utility.
