Sandwell Tops Event by Winning Two Awards of Excellence and the Prestigious Lieutenant-Governor’s Award
Vancouver, BC - Sandwell Engineering Inc. won three awards at this year’s annual Awards for Engineering Excellence Gala, hosted by the Consulting Engineers of British Columbia (CEBC). Sandwell was presented with both the Award of Excellence and the prestigious Lieutenant-Governor’s Award of Excellence for its design of the Tanker Loading Unit (TLU), and another Award of Excellence for its Seismic Risk Assessment Study.
“Sandwell’s success at the award’s gala was exceptional and we are extremely proud of the fine work that was achieved by the Sandwell teams,” said Alan Pyatt, Chairman, President and CEO. “Our reputation as a world-class engineering firm continues to grow; the two projects effectively demonstrate Sandwell’s broad range of interests from regional to complex international projects, representing a multitude of stakeholders, and issues concerning sustainability.”
Working directly for Sakhalin Energy Investment Company Ltd., Sandwell carried out the Front End Engineering and Design of the gravity based TLU substructure which is now operating in eastern Russia and involved in the development of offshore oil and gas fields. Among the many features, the design incorporates piled foundations which minimize the footprint and environmental impact of the structure.

“The awards are a true reflection of the caliber of engineering excellence that is coming out of BC,” said CEBC President, Arnold Badke. He further commented on the Lieutenant-Governor’s Award of Excellence as being the most prestigious award that is given to a project that excels among the Awards of Excellence from five categories include building, transportation, municipal, resource, energy and industry and soft engineering (software, plans).
The Seismic Risk Assessment Study was done for the Greater Vancouver Sewerage & Drainage District British Columbia. The Study highlights the susceptibility of the Vancouver region sewerage system, which represents some 500km of sewer mains, to earthquake damage. By predicting where damage could occur, work can be carried out to mitigate damage and reduce the significant environmental, economic and social impact of an earthquake disaster.
