Sandwell has been active in southeast Asia for more than half a century. Our clients include pulp and paper mills, coal mines, international aid agencies and governments. We have provided tropical wood processing expertise, bulk handling systems, marine terminal installations, and integrated rail transportation solutions.
Resource-rich Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago, comprising some 17,000 islands and a population of more than 235 million. We have worked extensively in the Indonesian pulp and paper industry, on projects that include mill valuations, bankable feasibility studies, operations assistance and improvement, detailed engineering design and a $1.2 billion greenfield bleached kraft pulp mill in Sumatra for which we were the Owner's Engineer.
Sandwell-designed coal handling systems and marine terminals can be found throughout the islands, and include the terminal expansion project for P.T. Kaltim Prima and the recent expansion of the Bontang coal mine, both in east Kalimantan.
Elsewhere in southeast Asia, we have provided expertise and assistance to pulp and paper mills in Malaysia, and to the government of Vietnam in improving its pulp and paper industry. Along with our subsidiary, International Rail Consultants, we have supplied rail transportation solutions for clients in Thailand and the Philippines as well as in Indonesia.
